Do all
environmental permits require monitoring?
No, not all permits require monitoring. One notable example is an
“air quality permit-to-construct.” This permit allows
construction, and sometimes operations, of new facilities with air
emissions according to specific plans. Follow-up permits may require
monitoring. Another example is a well drilling permit.
Examples of environmental permits that do require monitoring include
discharge permits for wastewater discharges to municipal sewer
systems, treatment plants, and rivers/streams/creeks; air pollution
operating permits covering emissions from specific industries; and
hazardous waste treatment or disposal facilities.
